Hilton Clears the Primary Hurdle

Politico was quick to frame Becerra as the likely winner, pointing to California’s “lopsidedly Democratic electorate.” ^[2] That framing is not wrong — California has not elected a Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger left office in 2011. Becerra brings name recognition, a long résumé in state and federal government, and the full weight of the Democratic Party machine, labor unions, and deep-pocketed donors behind him. ^[2] Conservatives should go in with clear eyes about what Hilton is up against.

But clear eyes cut both ways. California voters have watched homelessness explode, housing costs crush working families, businesses flee to Texas and Florida, and crime rise in major cities — all under uninterrupted Democratic leadership. Hilton is making the case that Becerra is part of that failed system, not the solution to it. ^[1] Whether enough California voters are ready to break from habit and vote for real change is the central question of this race. November will answer it.
