A Trump-backed Republican just punched his ticket to the California governor’s race — and for the first time in years, conservatives have a real shot at flipping the most Democrat-run state in America.
Story Highlights
- Steve Hilton finished in the top two of California’s all-party primary and will face Democrat Xavier Becerra in November.
- Hilton received strong backing from President Trump and Vice President Vance during the primary campaign.
- Hilton’s vote total set a new record for a Republican candidate in California’s governor’s race.
- Becerra, a former Biden Cabinet secretary, enters the general election with the advantage of California’s heavily Democratic voter base.
Hilton Clears the Primary Hurdle
Steve Hilton secured one of two spots in California’s November governor’s race after finishing in the top two of the June 2026 all-party primary. The Associated Press and NBC News both projected his advancement. [3] He will face Democrat Xavier Becerra, California’s former attorney general and former Biden administration health secretary. [1] The race to replace term-limited Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is now set — and for conservatives, the name on the ballot actually matters this time.
California uses a top-two primary system. Every candidate, regardless of party, runs on the same ballot. The two highest vote-getters advance to November — no matter what party they belong to. [8] Hilton cleared that bar in a crowded field that included billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer and progressive Democrat Katie Porter. Steyer fell short. [2] That Hilton outpolled several well-funded Democrats is itself a story worth telling.
A Record-Breaking Republican Performance
Hilton’s primary run was not just a procedural win. Reports indicate he set a new vote record for a Republican candidate in a California governor’s race. [9] That kind of performance in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by millions is not something to dismiss. President Trump publicly urged his supporters to vote for Hilton on primary day, and Vice President Vance also boosted his campaign. [12] That national-level backing helped drive turnout and visibility in a state where Republicans often struggle to get noticed.
Hilton is a British-born American conservative commentator and former political adviser who previously hosted a show on Fox News. [5] His campaign focuses on lowering taxes, cutting regulations, fixing California’s housing crisis, and reforming the state’s election administration. [11] He has been direct about his view that California has been run into the ground by one-party Democratic rule — a message that clearly resonated with a large chunk of the electorate.
The Road Ahead Is Steep — But Not Impossible
Politico was quick to frame Becerra as the likely winner, pointing to California’s “lopsidedly Democratic electorate.” [2] That framing is not wrong — California has not elected a Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger left office in 2011. Becerra brings name recognition, a long résumé in state and federal government, and the full weight of the Democratic Party machine, labor unions, and deep-pocketed donors behind him. [2] Conservatives should go in with clear eyes about what Hilton is up against.

But clear eyes cut both ways. California voters have watched homelessness explode, housing costs crush working families, businesses flee to Texas and Florida, and crime rise in major cities — all under uninterrupted Democratic leadership. Hilton is making the case that Becerra is part of that failed system, not the solution to it. [1] Whether enough California voters are ready to break from habit and vote for real change is the central question of this race. November will answer it.
