Maine’s Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner dropped out of the race after a woman told CNN and Politico he raped her in 2021 — and his own party turned against him before any court could weigh in.
Story Snapshot
- Jenny Racicot told CNN that Platner forced his way into her home while drunk in 2021 and raped her. She said flatly: “By definition, yes. Absolutely yes.”
- The Maine Democratic Party called the allegations “serious and credible” and demanded Platner withdraw immediately.
- Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Chuck Schumer pulled their endorsements and joined the chorus calling for him to quit.
- Platner suspended his campaign but denied everything, calling the timing “politically motivated” and the allegations “categorically false.”
What the Accuser Said
Jenny Racicot, 41, gave a detailed account to CNN and Politico on July 6, 2026. She said Platner entered her unlocked home late in 2021 while heavily drunk. She told him to stop. He did not. At one point he knocked over a sewing cabinet, and a needle ended up stuck in her leg. When asked directly if what happened was rape, she did not hesitate: “By definition, yes. Absolutely yes.”
Racicot said she did not go to police at the time. There is no police report. She did confide in people close to her, and screenshots of those messages exist — but no medical records or forensic evidence have been made public. Platner denied the incident ever happened, saying “the things that have been claimed did not happen” and “any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically false.” His denial was sweeping but did not address her specific details — the sewing cabinet, the needle, or her repeated demands to stop.
His Own Party Pulled the Plug
The Maine Democratic Party did not wait for a court. Party leaders issued a statement saying “multiple women have made serious, credible allegations” against Platner and called on him to “immediately withdraw.” Senators Sanders, Warren, and Schumer pulled their endorsements. National party groups and major donors said they would not fund his campaign. Some said they would rather see Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins win than back Platner.
Platner pushed back on the timing. He said he learned of the allegations through press calls just before the July 13 deadline for him to officially become the nominee. He called it “structural pressure” designed to force him out. That argument has some surface logic — the timing is tight and convenient. But it does not explain away the substance of what Racicot described, and it did not stop his own party from walking away.
A Pattern That Made It Worse
Before the rape allegation went public, a separate report surfaced showing Platner had posted on Reddit suggesting sexual assault victims should “take some responsibility” to avoid attacks. Those posts were later deleted. Platner also admitted in a statement to The New York Times that he had struggled with undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder and “self-medicated with alcohol” during what he called “a very dark period” of his life. That admission lines up directly with Racicot’s account of him being heavily drunk that night.

Platner suspended his campaign shortly after. He maintained his innocence in his exit statement but gave no path forward. Democrats now face a scramble to find a replacement candidate before the July 13 deadline. The party that spent years lecturing the country about believing women and holding men accountable found itself in a mess of its own making — backing a candidate with deleted posts dismissing assault victims, a self-admitted alcohol problem, and a detailed rape accusation from a woman willing to put her name on it. The voters of Maine are watching how the party cleans it up.
